marlie hall is here in new york and she is definitely dressed for the challenge this morning. marlie. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this surprisingly strong storm swept across the country, smacking the mid-atlantic region with snow and dangerous deadly ice. the storm slowed traffic and caused numerous accident including a fatal crash on the pennsylvania turnpike. 50 cars were involved in fender benders there. some motorists were stranded for up to seven hours. traffic was snarled from pennsylvania to new jersey. >> the driving today was terrible. it was wet everywhere. my car slipped around the road everywhere. you know, just really bad conditions out there. >> reporter: in philadelphia, nearly 10 inches of snow fell. yesterday's game in philadelphia between the eagles and detroit lions was played in near whiteout conditions. in maryland, a pickup truck slid off the road, and the snowy icy conditions hit new york but is expected to turn to rain later this morning. >> seemed like there was ice,

snow, and then ice again. >> reporter: this is the same storm that blanketed the southwest. the massive weather system left icy texas highways almost abandoned. the storm has severely hampered air travel. more than 3,000 flights nationwide were canceled yesterday from dallas to philadelphia, and thousands more delayed. power outages continue in the south and midwest, leaving tens of thousands without heat to face arctic-like temperatures. yesterday's annual christmas parade in baltimore was canceled, and this morning drivers from philadelphia to new england are being warned to take it easy. anne-marie? >> good advice. marlie hall here in new york. thank you, marlie. well, meteorologist megan glaros of our chicago station wbbm has been following this storm. >> areas that were hit by heavy snow overnight now transitioning to a wintry mix, which is sometimes more difficult on the morning commute than snow.

now, we see places like d.c., philadelphia, even new york contending with rain, snow, and ice, the combination of which will make for very rough travel anywhere from d.c. all the way up to new york city. boston looks like it will start as snow but eventually during the day today will transition over to that wintry mix. talking about a very difficult monday morning commute here for much of the east coast. ice will continue all the way back from east virginia to west virginia. places along the coast could be milder. tells could drop to below 4 for minneapolis, 9 for chicago, 12 for kansas city, 14 for fargo. even california beginning with a deep freeze this morning and will likely do so for another couple of days. megan glaros, cbs news, chicago. well, president obama and the first lady leave today to attend if memorial for nelson

mandela in south africa. it will be one of the largest gatherings of the national dignitaries in years. alphonso van marsh is in south africa with a preview. alphonso, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. as you mentioned authorities are rushing to prepare for that massive memorial that will be held tomorrow at the stadium. now, that stadium holds some 95,000 people, but authorities are bracing to see a whole lot more. south africans are preparing for public services for nelson mandela this week. president obama leaves this morning for johannesburg where he'll attend tomorrow's massive public memorial. former presidents bush, clinton, and carter will also be in attendance along with 50 heads of state, making it one of the world's largest gathers in recent history. >> this is a test for us. >> reporter: the national task force says the country is prepared for keeping so many dignitaries safe. 11,000 soldiers have been set in place around the country to

protect the mourners. >> we believe people will be watching the house of africa when we perform. >> reporter: this makeshift memorial outside of nelson mandela's former home in sweto is one of places where mourners have gathered. for a day of prayer. south africans of all races and religious backgrounds sang and praised for a man credited with united a country once bitterly divided. >> nelson mandela, this is a man who fought for me when i was not born yet. >> reporter: mandela's ex-wife winnie was among those attending the prayer services. now, anne-marie, these tributes still continue. there are children from a children's home. they're abandoned by their parents. they're singing tributes and

they're mourning the loss of their tata, fair father, nelson mandela. back to you. >> alphonso van marsh. thank you, alphonso. well, a possible showdown in ukraine. the government has told protesters to get out of city hall today. for more than two weeks tens of thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets clashing with police and demanding change. this is the country's largest protest since 2004. charlie d'agata reports. >> reporter: in tearing down the statue of vladimir lenin, protesters scored a symbolic victory, destroying a hate figure of the soviet era and a powerful reminder of the pro-russian government they're fighting against. they raised an opposition flag in its place. earlier hundreds of thousands of demonstrators gathered in the biggest show of strength yet, denouncing the government's decision not to sign a far-reaching trade deal with the european union, favoring, instead, building closer ties with moscow.

matt rogansky director of the kennan institute focuses on a blog. >> it's been some 22 years since the collapse of the soviet union, and what this european union association agreement offers them is, look, we've grown up as a country. it's a democratic country, a modern country. >> reporter: others don't see it that way. a smaller government rally was o held nearby. many believe ties to russia are in ukraine's best interest, especially given their reliance on cheap russian gas to heat their homes. despite a crackdown on crowds earlier this week, demonstrations are only getting bigger, upping the ante. protesters blockaded government buildings with makeshift barricades, piling up anything that wasn't nailed down, and they're not going away, vowing to keep up the pressure until the president steps down.

charlie d'agata, cbs news, london. secretary of defense chuck hagel was in pakistan this morning. he met with leaders to talk about security. it's his first visit in almost four years. yesterday he was in afghanistan where he spoke with margaret brennan. he asked if the u.s. will pull troops out of afghanistan if president karzai doesn't sign a security pact allowing them to stay until 2014. >> it's a very real possibility because if we don't have a bilateral security agreement which i've noted, that means we can't protect our forces that would be here at 2014. no international partners will come. afghanistan essentially will be alone. but we have no other option. >> american people look at this, all the blood, all the treasure. they hear things that hamid karzai says, adding new demands before he sign this security agreement, just a refusal to comply.

why can't americans look at that and say it's just not worth it? >> i think that is a legitimate question, that we should ask that question, is it worth it or not worth it. it needs to be asked. especially in a representative government, a democracy, those questions must be asked. so it is now up to president karzai to make a decision. >> did the u.s. miscalculate in thinking he could be a partner? >> well, he has been a partner. >> but he surprised the u.s. saying he was going to sign this thing and he didn't. >> we were surprised. and then to have him come back and try to reopen some of these issues, yes, it was disappointing, yes, it was surprising, but, you know, we're dealing with the realities we have before us. >> secretary hagel also said he met privately with afghan leaders, and they assured him the deal would get done. in iran, u.n. nuclear inspectors visited a heavy water production plant on sunday. this is the first time in more than two years inspectors have been allowed inside.

house and senate negotiators are reportedly putting finishing touches on what would be the first successful budget agreement in two years. the "washington post" says the plan would not reduce the nation's $17 trillion debt, close tax loopholes, or change health care and retirement programs. the deal is expected to be completed later this week. asian markets got a list from strong export numbers in china and a sliding yen. tokyo's nikkei added more than 2% for its best one-day gain in three months. hong kong's hang seng gained a quarter percent. the stock market could get a jolt this week as more ompanies are expected to announce lower than expected quarterly earnings. the dow finished 198 points higher on friday driven by four months of consecutive job gains. gains. the nasdaq gained more than 29 points. fed officials expect continued improvement in the nation's economy in the next year. the feds have repeatedly criticized the program. the new york times says the plan

to cut the bond buying program could come next week. gasoline prices are moving higher. the average price of a gallon of regular nationwide increased 3 cents over the past two weeks to $3.28. the lundberg survey says prices at the pump have risen 6 cents over the past nine months after a three-week decline. and "frozen" frosted ""the hunger games."" the disney animation took first place with $31 million in ticket sales. after dominating the box office for two weeks "the hunger games: catching fire" came in second. virginia all the way to new england. very little snow accumulation is expected though. much of the south will be cloudy with rain likely from southeast texas to the carolinas. up to 2 inches of snow is expected from the texas panhandle to the ozarks. the midwest will be mainly dry and much of the west will be unusually cold, especially across the rockies. in sports, a crazy play to end the steelers/dolphins game. only four seconds left, and pittsburgh down by six. ben roethlisberger passes to emmanuel sanders. after racing down field, he laterals it to jerricho cotchery. he flips it to le'veon bell who passes it to big marcus gilbert. 77 dumps it back to roethlisberger. he then passes it to antonio brown who dances down the sideline, blows past some dolphins and goes all the way for the winning score, but look at his foot. yeah, he stepped out of bounds at the 12.

a potentially powerful weapon in the fight against cancer. according to new research an experimental treatment using gene therapy has a high success rate against leukemia and other blood cancers. doctors say white blood cells are removed from the patient and are then jgenetically altered t attack cancer. at one point 120 patients were given the treatment and many went into remission and stayed that way for up to three years. a clinical trial next year could lead to federal approval of the treatment by 2016. and a popular gift for children under the christmas tree this year may be a book. overall the category of kids' books is the fastest growing in publishing, and as jeff glor reports, young people are not the only ones reading them. >> reporter: when r.j. pa lash owe sat down to write a kid's book, she tried to put herself in the mind of a 10-year-old.

we've got 23 in santa rosa, 24 in napa 32 in livermore but a sign of warmer weather on the way. >> we already have problems in oakland, a traffic alert, a big rig hit some of the sand barrels and there was debris all over the roadway. they just cleared all lanes but the fifth avenue off ramp will remain closed the next couple hours so we have a couple other issues including black ice. >> it's a monday. >> i know, and wind advisory as well. >> and it is cold out there and we spoke to people in the eastbay that they don't seem to mind the cold. in fact those freezing temperatures didn't keep folks home over the weekend. kpix spent the day in concord. >> reporter: with temperatures headed for freezing, snow was piling up here in walnut creek at the ice rink on civic and folks were putting on more clothes. >> dressed up, bundled, three layers down. >> good day to come ice skating? >> great day. >> the sun was shining in late afternoon as the temperature dropped to 40 degrees. >>ha
